HISTORY
Lake Park in Lutz, FL has a rich history in radio control
car racing. Beginning in the late 1980s drivers
from around the world such as Masami Hirosaka, Cliff
Lett, Gil Losi Jr., Jay Halsey, Joel Johnson and Jurgen
Lautenbach came to Lake Park to participate in the Winter
Championships.
In the 1990s the Winter Championships, sponsored
by Team Losi, became the premier racing event in the
world for 1/10th electric off-road vehicles. Often referred
to as the worlds in-between worlds, the Winter Championships
became so popular that as many as 1000 entries were
submitted for competition.
Manufacturers often used this event as a spring board
for new vehicles and accessories.
Highlights include:
In 1991 Team Associated debuted the RC10T to a 1st
place finish in the modified truck class driven by Cliff
Lett.
In 1992 Team Losi retaliated by debuting the LXT to
a 1st place finish in the modified truck class driven
by Jammin Jay Halsey.
In 1993 local Team Associated driver Brad Reelfs took
home the victory in the prestigious 2wd modified class.
In 1994 Masami Hirosaka came into town for the event
winning both the 2wd and 4wd modified classes. Team
Associated dominated this event with 9 RC10Ts
in the modified truck A-main and 8 RC10s
in the 2wd modified class A-main.
In 1995 Team Associated debuted the RC10T2 racing truck
with Rick Howart putting the truck into the TQ position.
Team Losis Scott Brown went on to win the A-main
with his XX-T truck. Interestingly enough Scotts
overall win came without winning, as he had the lowest
points available even without winning any of the 3
A-mains.
In 1996 Team Losi Driver Brian Kinwald won the 2wd
modified class and teammate Greg Hodapp won the modified
truck class with their XX and XX-T vehicles. Team Losi
debuted the new Sprint tire at this event in Silver
compound.
In 1997 Team Associated and Team Losi split the event
with Associateds Mark Pavidis winning the 2wd
modified class and Team Losis Brian Kinwald winning
the modified truck class. This event also marked the
first major event for the Pro-Line Holeshot tire which
is still being used in competition today.
In 1998 Mark and Matt Francis dominated for Team Losi
with Mark winning the Modified truck class and Matt
winning the 2wd modified class. This event was heavily
affected by rain as drivers from out of town received
little or no practice.
In 1999 Team Associated driver Mark Pavidis won both
the 2wd modified and truck class driving the RC10B3
and RC10T3 vehicles. This event marked the end of an
era at Lake Park.
